Embark on a delightful journey just a short cab ride away from Melbourne’s CBD to The Alps, in the charming suburb of Prahran.
This wine bar offers a splendid array of European wines, perfectly complemented by a menu that seamlessly continues the European theme. Stepping inside, you’ll find a cozy haven exuding style, with golden timber joint tables and the warm glow of industrial tungsten lights creating an intimate atmosphere.
It’s a perfect setting to relax with small plates of gravlax, cheese platters, and charcuterie, enhancing the experience of each sip of shiraz.
Crafted by the talented Mark Hopkinson and Renton Carlyle of the famous Richmond café Romulus & Remus, The Alps transforms an old milk bar on Commercial Road into a sexy wine bar.
Drawing inspiration from its older siblings, the venue blends exposed bricks with honey-toned timbers, complemented by the soft flicker of candles. Venture to the back, and the intimate ‘Cabin’ room exudes a cozy ski chalet vibe, complete with a cast-iron brazier and cushioned banquettes.
Beyond, a conifer-lined courtyard with picnic tables awaits warmer days, but for now, the inviting interiors beckon for cool wines on cold nights.
Given the premium kitchen space, the snacking menu is curated to feature wine-friendly French and Italian classics. Indulge in a densely packed pork terrine studded with pistachios, a creamy and sweet orb of burrata, and blush-pink vitello tonnato boasting the salty smack of tuna mayo, capers, and parmesan.
Accompanied by a week’s worth of baguette, the dishes are generous and satisfying, though a bit more time out of the fridge could have enhanced their flavors even further. The Alps promises an exquisite blend of European delights and warm hospitality, inviting you to savor every moment in this stylish and intimate wine bar.
